Preparing for a telehealth counselling appointment

Practical steps to get the most from your online counselling session, from technology setup to creating a private, comfortable space.

Updated 28 July 2026

A little preparation can help your telehealth session run smoothly and feel more secure. Choose a private room where you will not be overheard or interrupted. If you are at home, let others know you need uninterrupted time.

Test your camera, microphone, and internet connection a few minutes before the session. Using headphones can improve sound quality and privacy. Make sure your device is adequately charged or plugged in.

Have a glass of water and any relevant documents nearby, such as your Victims Services approval letter, a list of medications, or notes about what you want to discuss.

Try to arrive at the video link or platform a minute or two early. If technical problems occur, your counsellor will contact you by phone or email to reschedule or continue the session another way.
