How online trauma counselling works
An evidence-based explanation of trauma-focused counselling delivered via telehealth, including common approaches and safety considerations.
Updated 28 July 2026
Online trauma counselling uses the same evidence-based approaches as face-to-face therapy, delivered through a secure video platform. Trauma-focused counselling aims to reduce the impact of distressing memories, improve emotional regulation, and restore a sense of safety and control.
Your counsellor may draw on structured approaches such as trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy, EMDR-informed techniques, or other evidence-based interventions suited to your presentation. The approach is chosen collaboratively and adjusted over time.
Telehealth sessions require a private space, a stable internet connection, and a device with a camera and microphone. Before trauma processing begins, your counsellor will work with you to build coping strategies and ensure you have support outside sessions.
If at any point you feel unsafe or in crisis, your counsellor will help you access appropriate emergency or crisis services. Online counselling is not a crisis service and should not replace emergency care.
